Starting a Home-based Business—Is It Right for You?

Hundreds of thousands of individuals decide to start a home-based business each year. Many succeed. About 70 percent of all home based businesses are in operation after two years. Before entering this venture, entrepreneurs should consider several key questions:
Can you operate the business alone with little help?
Do you have contact with buyers or your services?
Is the location such that distributors, sales staff, clients and others can reach it without difficulty?
Is start-up and operations capital available for the first year?
Can the business really be operated from the home?
Do you have separate spaces for storage, records, isolation, parking, etc.?
Can a business in the home compete with similar businesses?

As in most businesses, there are advantages and disadvantages to the home-based business. A business in the home permits flexibility of working hours, lower start-up costs and allows family affairs to continue during business hours. There are also disadvantages—zoning restrictions may prohibit business, the IRS may raise tax questions, it may be difficult to get materials and customers to the location and financing the business could be challenging.
The IRS specifies that a home-based business must have its own location away from the family living space that is devoted exclusively to the business. The business must be in regular operation, profits must exceed expenses in order to claim deductions, the business must be conducted almost exclusively in the home and the motive must be profit.
A major challenge in operating a home-based business is isolation from distributors, merchants, clients and interested parties. Modern communications help to alleviate the problem—a computer is a necessity. A fax machine and Internet access are almost certainly necessary for communications within the business community. In addition, separate telephone phone lines must be installed for telephone, fax and Internet access and the business phone needs some type of answering service.
In summary, the business must be run as a business not as an extension of the home. It is essential that the prospective business owner have a good business and financial plan, separate from the family finances, that clearly spells out the present and future of the business.
Be aware that many neighborhoods have deed restrictions forbidding the operation of a business. Some require extra off street parking, others forbid deliveries and signs, etc. It is wise to check with your Home Owners Association and with your local government for a complete survey of your city or county regulations.
It may be difficult to raise capital. The average home-based business requires about $10,000 in start-up costs. Although this may be much less than opening a business outside the home, both the start-up and operating funds should be in hand before beginning the business operation.
Help is available. The National Association of the Self-employed (NASE) can provide help and information, as well as your local SCORE office. Find SCORE on this Web site to meet face-to-face with a professional business counselor.

If our vision is the destination, the ideal structure we see on the horizon, then goals are the substance, the sustenance, that gives flight to our ideas. For example, assuming you’ve chosen the type of building your want, you can now decide how many rooms it will have and how they will be furnished—the style and ambience you want to achieve.

Manage Tactics We all wrestle with innumerable tasks that fill up our daily “To-Do” lists. Most new business owners, and many experienced ones, too, are all too familiar with activities that can take us in a dozen different directions at the same time. They scatter our focus, until at the end of the day we’re exhausted—but find ourselves wondering whether we've accomplished anything of importance. No doubt about it, such tasks can derail the most capable business owner. That’s why it’s important to make the distinction between a tactic, an approach to accomplishing something, and an activity, which, while necessary, could be assigned a lower priority or delegated elsewhere, freeing you to keep your eye on the prize.
Formulate Strategies Unlike establishing a vision, defining goals and employing daily tactics, which are individual undertakings, strategies can be shared, adapted and refined among other entrepreneurs in other field. Strategies are the blueprints you draw to help you achieve your goals; they are the systems you use to get yourself where you want to be. Employing strategies is putting brain before brawn, planning before you act. Strategies are so important that I had no difficulty filling an entire book with them! Business Planning: From the Heart

A decade ago, when I was employed as a chartered surveyor for a major British insurance company, I realized that I was doing something that was making my family happy, but not making me happy. I realized, too, that I needed to be doing something creative, the end result of which I could see for myself.
At the same time, I met my future business partner, David Tyreman, who was also working as a surveyor at the same company. Instantly, we validated each other's feelings—and frustrations—about the work we were doing.
During a two-week vacation to Santa Barbara, California, we did more than just vent. Knowing we wanted to be self-employed, but hardly knowing what we wanted to be doing, we asked ourselves a series of questions that, at first glance, appeared to have little to do with business—questions such as: What were our personal strengths? What did we want out of any business we launched?
The answers were just as surprising. At the top of the list of must-haves were words like “fun,” “adventure,” “traveling,” “non-corporate,” and toward the bottom was the word “money.” That really surprised us. As for those "personal strengths," I knew that my skills and personality were best suited for the role I would eventually play as chief executive, namely finding new customers, new markets and new products.
A Business Plan for YouDuring that discussion, we also gave ourselves a deadline. One year from that very day, June 1, 1987, we would be self-employed, we told ourselves. It was a deadline we indeed did meet. On June 1, 1988, we officially became our own bosses, having given our notices a month earlier.
A year after that, in 1989, we sat down again, this time to put a plan in writing for a $50,000 credit line. It was then that we understood that we really had two plans, a written plan for the bank—undoubtedly a necessary document for securing money from a boring man in a gray suit—and an additional unwritten plan for us. We had been working from the unwritten plan ever since the day on the hotel balcony in California. What's more, it was the unwritten plan that clearly was the more important of the two.
As an entrepreneur starting or expanding a business, you, too, must work from a plan that engages your heart as well as your head. While you have a plan for your bankers, you must also have a plan for you, the one that speaks to your passions. You must understand that it's business planning from the heart that really builds businesses.
Milestones from the HeartIn our case, it was the plan from our hearts that enabled us to start Propaganda, which provides vintage and contemporary decoratives, artwork and fixtures for department stores, specialty retailers and restaurants. When we set out for the United States in August 1988 with our first cargo of antiques, we didn't know what type of company we'd eventually build. We just knew that buying and selling antiques satisfied our need for "travel" in our work. Quitting our jobs to become self-employed and leaving England with our antiques and dreams were our first passion-driven milestones.
Our next milestone was securing the $50,000 credit line, for which we did write the formal plan. This funding enabled us to secure enough inventory, scout for customers at trade shows and keep a roof over our heads. Interestingly, the bank manager who signed off on the loan later confided that he had hardly glanced at our written plan. It had been the passion with which David and I had delivered our proposal that had convinced him.
A few years later, in 1993, planning from the heart again drove a major decision. By then, our business had evolved from selling antiques to individuals to developing a market among upscale retailers. Having secured contracts from Banana Republic, Polo Ralph Lauren, and others, we knew we needed to expand.
Expansion came in the form of a 30,000-square-foot warehouse in San Francisco that was much bigger than we needed at the time. When we saw it, however, we immediately realized that it would enable us to grow. Our passion told us we had come to the United States to do something big, not little, and so we bought the warehouse. Today, it provides us with office and storage space, as well as two apartments, one for my wife and me, the other for David and his partner.
Finding Your PassionIn planning from the heart, an entrepreneur needs to understand what drives him. In my case, that was easy. During my growing-up years, my father had toiled as a traveling menswear salesman, work that he disliked. He all but ignored interests that would have brought joy to his life, such as his love for music. A few days before he died, he played a Nat King Cole song on the piano—I hadn't even known he could play the piano! My father's work left him so broken and exhausted that he couldn't even enjoy life outside of work. His experience convinced me to live my life differently.
In finding your own passion, focus on what you love, what you're good at, and what suits your personality. Ask questions such as those that David and I raised on that hotel balcony in California: Do I want to be creative? Work flexible hours? Travel?
By all means, build charts and graphs. But build them around parameters that will enable you to create a business that does the following:
Reflects you; if you're fun, trustworthy and unconventional, these should be your company's core values.
Involves your passion; it's infectious—even loan officers love associating with passionate people.
Plays to your strengths; nothing's worse than associating your work with pain or boredom.
Does business with people who understand and appreciate your values; human beings do their best when they're appreciated.
Breaks the rules; if you've always wanted a disco dance floor in your boardroom, then have one! (We do, and our customers love it!)
Doesn't worry about the bottom line; if you're having a blast, you'll do an incredible job, and the money will follow.
These days, we're gearing up for the next milestone, taking Propaganda from revenue of $4 million to $50 million, and, yes, we do have a written plan. But in reality, we know that it's the plan in our hearts that will get us to that milestone.

Earn Cash Through an Affiliate Program

Affiliate programs are an easy way to make your Web site earn money. With hundreds of these programs on the Web, you have a good chance of finding one that matches your site. Just be sure you read the fine print before you join.

Affiliate programs have many names, including associate programs, referral programs, reseller programs, or partner programs. Regardless of the name, they all work under the same basic concept: you place a link to a commercial Web site on your page, and they pay you a fee for each piece of business generated from your referral.
Affiliate programs have become a core part of many commercial Web site's marketing strategy. In fact, a recent survey by Forrester Research rates them as the most effective means of site promotion. Commercial Web sites are fond of these programs because they pay based on results, not on raw advertising impressions.
But not all programs are created equal, and some produce poor results. One Webmaster of a large country music site recently told us about his experience with a music retailer's program: "I feel like I sent them a lot of traffic, and I never got a dime from them."
With that in mind, here are some things to consider before you join an affiliate program.
1. Goodness of fit. Does this affiliate program compliment your site? Don't join an affiliate program just for the sake of joining. If you run a site about child care, linking to books about parenting is appropriate; linking to a music site may not be. Your best bet is to link to partners offering products that add value to your site.
2. Continuing or one-time revenue. Affiliate programs typically pay a 5-15% commission on their sales. But a higher commission isn't the only factor; you should also consider the term of your referral. Some programs pay you only for sales made to the customer on their first visit. Some pay better for items that you specifically link to. The best programs pay you a commission on all future sales to the customers you refer.
3. Online reporting. You need to be able to see how you're referrals are doing at any time. Any serious affiliate program will have online reporting of your referrals and how much money the site has earned from them. Stay away from any program that doesn't offer this.
4. Payment threshold. Most programs require your referrals to generate some amount of cash before you get your commission. For example, Barnes & Noble offers a 5% commission on all sales from your referral, but they won't pay you until your commissions exceed $100.
Does that mean you're being swindled? Not really. Keep in mind that for your partner's site accounting costs are the major expense of the affiliate program. Since they want to keep accounting costs down, they want to avoid making micro-payments to their affiliates. It's just not worth it to cut a check for $5.
In addition, many programs will only pay you at a specified frequency. Quarterly payment is typical. Again, that's done to keep accounting costs down.
5. Read the Terms. An affiliate program may look good at first glance, but the devil's in the details. Be sure to read the program's Terms and Conditions before you join. A disappointing number of affiliate programs bury their terms inside the sign up process. That's bad, because it discourages you from reading them. Don't feel pressured. By all means, print a copy of the terms and read them carefully. Don't be afraid to exit the sign up process and complete it later, after you've had time to study the terms.
So where can you find a good affiliate program? Two good starting points are Refer-It and AssociatePrograms.com. These sites together list hundreds of programs. And don't forget our new Partner Program, which pays you a ongoing 20% commission on all your referrals.

As we fast approach the new year, many firms are preparing to launch their 2006 marketing efforts. If you're thinking about hiring a marketing specialist, make sure you consider these 17 key points.
1. Objective Advice. Consultants who are paid fees are more likely to give you unbiased advice than consultants who earn commissions based on the amount of money you spend. If the consultant profits from ad agency commissions, he has an inherent conflict of interest because the more you spend, the more he makes.
2. Experience. Marketing is so specialized and complex that I recommend you hire someone who has provided marketing services for a minimum of 15 years. But, don't assume that because the person has been in business 15 years, he has the knowledge, skill, judgment and experience you need. Make sure you thoroughly interview all consultants you are considering.
3. Workload. Does the law marketing professional do the work for you? Or does the marketing person serve as a coach and simply tell you what you should be doing?
4. Service. Do you feel that the consultant wants to provide you with the help you need to make your program succeed? Or do you get the impression that he is looking for bigger fish to fry and that you're just a small fish in the ocean?
5. Access. Is the consultant hidden behind a wall of secretaries, account executives and administrative assistants? Or is he readily available to you by phone, fax, and e-mail?
6. Stability. Has the consultant been providing marketing services for some years? Or is he new to marketing -- or new to lawyer marketing -- and just waiting for the opportunity to move on to something else?
7. Marketing Focus. Is the consultant a full-time marketing professional? Or does he offer advice in other disciplines, such as management, human resources, training or finance?
8. Authority. Does the consultant have enough experience that he is a recognized authority in his field? Or is he still a relative unknown?
9. Size and Efficiency. Does the consultant have a large staff and/or a penthouse office that his clients pay for? Or when you write a check, are you paying for his high level of knowledge, skill, judgment and experience?
10. Markups. Does this consultant mark up outside services he hires on your behalf, such as graphic artists, printers, photographers, web site technicians, and so forth? Or does this consultant provide those services to you at cost?
11. Travel. Does the consultant travel around the country from one client to next, running up airline bills? Or does the consultant keep costs down by working efficiently with you by telephone, fax and e-mail?
12. Coverage. Does the consultant have a competent marketing specialist who covers for him when he travels? Or are you relegated to an account executive or administrative assistant who takes messages and tries to relay them to the consultant while he is on the road.
13. Attention. Does the consultant have so many clients he can't provide you with the personal care and attention you deserve? Or does he limit his services to a few select clients who receive the best he has to offer?
14. Work. Does the consultant himself perform the work on your behalf? Or does the consultant delegate your work to a junior associate?
15. Marketing Specialization. Is the consultant a marketing professional who works only with one type of marketing? Or does he try to be a "jack of all trades" so he can provide whatever marketing services you want to buy?
16. Writing Skills. In marketing, nothing is more important than for your consultant to have superior writing skills. And don't expect the consultant's writing to follow the rules of what you and I learned in school because marketing writing is different from academic writing. To sample your consultant's writing style, read published articles and marketing materials that your consultant wrote. You'll know right away whether they come across as warm and friendly -- or if the writing seems cold and impersonal. The way the consultant writes for himself will be similar to the way he writes for you. So make sure the consultant you choose has a writing style you admire.
17. Testimonials. Does the marketing consultant have comments from other lawyers you can review? The consultant you're considering should provide you with at least 30 or 40 testimonials from other lawyers. If he provides only a few, you may be reading comments from his in-laws.

6 Article Marketing Smarts: How To Get More Reprints And Exposure

Article marketing is the latest buzzword for marketers looking to promote their sites and products online. But how do you measure the success of your article marketing campaign?
It probably depends on what you expect your article to achieve for you - better branding, more sales, or more publicity.
One way to measure article performance is to check how many times your article has been picked up and reproduced on various sites.
To do that, just copy and paste the article title in quotes into a search engine like Google, and you'll see how many sites it's been reprinted on.

This gives me about 1061 quality links to each of the sites I included in my resource box.
As you can see, this makes article marketing a very powerful way of building quality links.
So how do you ensure that your article gets picked up and reprinted by as many publishers as possible?
1. Pick A Topic That's Hot Or Always Fresh
For instance, my article on Neuromarketing got picked up pretty quickly because it was a hot topic. http://marketingslave.com/2005/06/01/neuromarketing-smart-marketing-or-jedi-mind-control-trick/
The problem with hot topics is that they also tend to cool off quickly. So while they may get a lot of reprints over a short time, they may get very few reprints once the craze is over.
There are some articles that are slow starters but eternally fresh, like the one I wrote here.

These are the ones that will give you reprints over a longer period of time. I think in the long run, these are more valuable.
2. Target A Large Audience

3. Craft A Catchy, Relevant Title
A catchy title ensures that your article gets the attention of publishers - the first step to getting your article published.
Follow the basic rules of copywriting to make your article interesting and readable.
Publishers are more likely to pick up an article if its title includes the keywords that they (and you) want to target.
Use your main keywords in your title, preferable in the first half (like I did in the title of this article), to ensure better rankings for those who reprint it.
4. Offer Publishers A Monetary Incentive
Give people an incentive to publish your article. I have an affiliate program and I allow publishers to use their affiliate link for my ezine in the resource box.
Allow publishers to earn by publishing your article and they will gladly reprint it.
5. Write An Article Series
Break up a long article or report into a series of articles like I did with my "Marketing With Blogs" series here.

It reaches the people who want what you are offering, convinces them to take action, and keeps them coming back.
Sounds nice, right? So why doesn't every business have a marketing plan? Let's take a look at some of the reasons you may not:
1. "We had a marketing plan once, but it didn't work. It isn't worth the time to put one together."
No marketing plan will work if you do not work the plan. The planning document is there for business managers to use as a strategic reference throughout the year, as programs in the plan are executed and as other opportunities come along. Any marketing plan that is filed away and forgotten as soon as it's written is useless.
2. "So-and-so had a marketing plan and it didn't help his business at all!"
Marketing is a process, not a singular event. A marketing plan is only the first step in that process. It points your business in the right direction by detailing marketing strategies and programs that will move you toward business objectives.
You must execute the programs in your plan so that you can evaluate program success. Rarely does a marketing program work best on the first try. It is up to you to analyze barriers to success, then tweak and tinker until you are getting positive results. If you ignore critical follow-up, most of your marketing programs -- whether you have a marketing plan or not -- will fail or fall short of their potential for success.
3. "Marketing planning is too hard."
Writing a marketing plan doesn't have to be complicated. There are different levels of planning. More intricate marketing planning processes will result in more refined strategies, with better potential for success. But, if you have limited resources, a top-line approach to planning is much better than none at all.
4. "We don't know how to write a marketing plan."
There are numerous books, software, "toolbox" resources, and articles that take you step-by-step through the process of creating a marketing plan. Frankly, not knowing how is an excuse, not a reason, to avoid marketing planning.
5. "My business is too small for a marketing plan."
Sound marketing strategy is critical to small business success, especially new businesses. Statistics vary widely depending on the source, but most reports cite failure rates for small business at 65% -- 90%. Knowing ahead of time how you will compete and how you will be successful in your marketplace can dramatically increase your chances of success.

Currency Exchanging...Turning Computers into Cash Registers

By the time you finish reading this you’ll know all about the newest way to make money online. It’s called Currency Exchanging!
When I say Currency Exchanging people often think that I mean Foreign Exchange, Day Trading, Buying and Selling of Stocks and things that involve risk. This is totally different.
In reality, there are global currency exchanges available that will pay you in excess of 20% of your working capital in a period of days, all risk-free.
This is a business that you can do from home with your computer. There’s no selling involved. There’s no recruiting involved because this is not a multi-level marketing company or an affiliate program of any kind. Once you know what to do you don’t need anyone else to make a nice daily income for yourself.
I came across this program by accident late last year.
In November of 2004, I learned how to set everything up and put $500 in which started making money right away. I decided to take a little break through the Christmas holidays and by the end of January 2005 I had made over $13,000 profit with very little work.

Which Niche To Conquer?

I'm sure that you've heard about how many start up companies fail when they first begin, and the reason that most (if not all) of their failures is because they don't create a good fountain to build on.
If we start right, it is easy to go right all the time. But if we start wrong, it's much harder to go back and get it right. So please pay close attention, get out your pen and pencil, and let's get to work.
When you first start, you need to decide which niche are you going to conquer.
When I first started my online business, I made the same mistake that 99.9% of people make. I read an ebook about how to make money online, and I decided that I would...
can you guess...?
I wrote my own book about "how to make money." I compiled all of the regurgitated information I could find, put a twist on it, and started to sell it. After 2 weeks and a little over $30 in sales I started to think:
"Why am I selling a book about how to make money... when I have NEVER in my life made any real money!?!"
You may laugh, but it took me a few weeks before I realized that there was a problem there. I decided to stop selling my book, and started to look for other ways to make money online. What I stumbled upon next really gets exciting.
I was going to college at the time, and my degree is in "Computer Information Systems." I knew some things about programming, but not enough to create anything real. What I did know is where programmers spend their time online.
So I started visiting places where you could hire programmers and got to know a few. I then started to search for a market that needed something.
What I came upon was the "Resale Rights" market. Basically this was people buying and selling digital products (ebooks and software) that they could then go and sell to other people. This concept really excited me. I purchased a lot of these products, but struggled to sell them because all of the products had links back to the author's websites.
These authors were making money every time I sold these products... on the backend. When I realized that, the first thing I thought was,
"I wish that had a way to brand all of these files with my own links."
And there the idea was born. I just needed to create a product that would brand these "resale rights" products. I wouldn't be competing directly with that market, but make a complementary product that would benefit them all.
I went back to the programmers that I had been building relationships with, and gave them my idea. Within a matter of weeks they created a product that is now known as Zip Brander. (You can see the product at www.ZipBrander.com)
I'm not going to go into how I marketed it in this lesson (I'll save that for another day), but with the one product I made over $1,000 my first month with it, and it made us over $50,000 in 2004 alone.
Since then I've been able to branch out to a lot of various niches and have had amazing success in most of them. In other issues I will share exact case studies of these that you will be able to model in your businesses.
How To Pick The Right Niche
I want to show you now how to choose your niche. Just follow these 3 simple steps.
Step 1 - Do not choose the "how to make money" niche. I'm not sure why, but I made this mistake along with thousands of other people. This is the most competitive niche in the world. If you want to fight against the marketers, good luck. But there is a lot more money (and it's made a lot easier) in the niches I'll explain below.
Step 2 - Look at your personal talents, and start from there. I have had this conversation more then once - usually every time I discuss an online business with someone.
I ask them what their hobbies are that we could market, and they almost always they tell me that they don't have anything they could sell. The problem is that people usually look at their current job, and can't think of ways they can market that skill.
Don't look at your current job, but look at what you do on your free time. The thing that is your passion. This is where you'll find your niche.
Here are examples of the last 3 conversations I've had:
Friend #1 - works construction, and couldn't think of a marketable skill. After 3 1/2 minutes realized that he has twin girls. Found there was a huge market for informational product in this niche and him and his wife are now working on their first product.
Friend #2 - works as a manager at Office Depot. One the weekends loves to shot guns with his dad. They are creating a software program that helps people to increase their accuracy when shooting. They are also creating video demonstrations on how to improve your accuracy.
Friend #3 - came to me asking for help promoting a "how to make money online" course. He had to call me using a video relay because he's deaf. I told him that he was going in the wrong direction with what he was promoting. He had no experience making money online. I asked him what his hobbies were, and surely enough told me he didn't have any that he could sell. Before I even asked that question I knew what his niche was. He's been speaking through sign language his whole life, and there are thousands of people searching every month on how to learn sign language.
What do you do in your free time when no one else is around? Are you good at video games? Are you a good cook? Do you play any sports? Do you throw dinner parties? Do you collect anything? Can you play an instrument? What is your passion? When you can answer this... then you know what your niche is.
Step 3 - Research your market. Don't worry - this part isn't nearly as hard as you'd think. Within about 5 minutes I can usually tell if a niche is worth looking at. There are 3 things you need to do, and you'll know if it's the right niche.
First - Check out the search engines. There are a lot more advanced tools then this, but this one is completely free to use. Go to http://inventory.overture.com and type in your niche. This will show you how many times that word was searched for that month on their search engine. If there are a lot of people searching for it each money, the it's likely a good niche.
Second - Search for online communities related to your niche. People with similar interests migrate to the same places online. Wrestlers hang out at wrestling forums, poets hang out in poetry message boards, etc... Go to www.google.com and type in "________ forums" or "_________ message board" or "_______ groups" (put your niche in the blank). Visit these forums and see if they are active and how many members they have. You can often find forums with 10,000+ members in it. If you find good communities focused around your niche, then this is another good sign.
Third - Search for similar products. If you can find others selling products in your niche, then it's usually a good sign that there's some life there. Purchase their products and get to know your competition (because they are going to become your JV partners in another lesson).
After getting this far, you should have a good idea about which niche you would like to conquer, as well as some idea about if it is a profitable niche.

It sounds so easy. You join a programme, get a link, choose a couple of keywords, put up an ad and the money flows. Many have tried and many have failed.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s possible to make money this way and to be very successful. There are many people making $100’s per day from their Adwords campaigns. But those that are successful don’t follow the herd, they think for themselves.
As with all things in life the greater success is found on the ‘road less travelled’ which means if you do what everybody else is doing you will get the results that everybody else is getting. And the fact is that everybody else, or at least the majority, are trying maybe making a little money, getting disheartened and moving on to something else.
We need to be different.
So what does our average money maker do? First he goes to Click Bank and visits the ‘Money & Employment’ category and he selects one of the top 10 products. That is not bad strategy but maybe we should be a little different if we must sell in the making money online space then why don't we find excellent products that aren't available on Click Bank.
A little but a bit of work at Google will uncover a number of directories where we can find products to promote. Or better still why not find out who the top names are in the making money online space and search out their affiliate programs. Yanik Silver, Marlon Sanders & John Reese all operate their own affiliate programs & these guys also have excellent materials that will help you to sell their products.
But even better still we could target a totally different market. There are millions of people spending millions of dollars on things other than how to get rich products. Checkout these links to see what people are searching on this month.

Once our Money Maker (MM) has selected the same product to promote as everybody else he then chooses the same keywords as everybody else to bid on at Google. He will type those words into the Keyword tool at Overture or into Adwords Analyzer. Then he will have a big list of the same keywords as everybody else promoting that product.
Do you think there might be a little competition for these keywords? You think those words might be expensive to bid on? You betcha.
What we need to do is think a little differently whatever market we choose there will be competition and if there is no competition it probably means that nobody is spending in this market. We need to think ‘outside of the box’. We need to get inside the minds of the typical buyer of a product. We need to think what related problems they may be having what other things they will be searching for and we need to create our own keyword list.
Finally MM writes one ad, that will show for all his keywords. His ad describes the features of the product. We on the other hand will write an ad highlighting the benefits of the product. All those eyeballs will be attracted to our ‘sizzle, not the sausage’. We will include a call to action.
We will have multiple ad groups separated out into themes, our ads will be relevant to the keywords in the group and we will have two ads for each group so we can see what works and what doesn’t. We will test, test & test some more.
Our success will be found on the road less travelled.
There is still plenty of room in the Adwords pool as long as we are prepared to think for ourselves and not expect a free ride.

8. Selling E-Books Do you know something about your craft or hobby that you know people would pay to learn as well? Then sell it in an e-book. What a great way to make a little extra money. You take the time to write a good quality e-book then just fill the orders. You could even set it up so that once the e-book order has been processed and paid for, it goes out automatically using an auto responder without you even having to lift a finger, except to go to the bank to collect your money.
9. Consulting - Offer your services Do you sell wedding supplies and know all of the best suppliers around? Do a little research and offer your services as a wedding coordinator. Offer your assistance to the people that want to plan their own wedding, but need a little bit of help.

My number 1 disadvantage of working from home on the internet is interruptions by family members while I’m trying to do something productive. Number 2 is just plain laziness and procrastination. As my own boss it’s easy to put off work from home business in exchange for a nice quiet day in front of the TV watching the discovery channel. It’s rally hard to get motivated sometimes. Especially when everyone has left the house and you are all alone.
Number 3 is finding a good balance between family time work from home business time and my full time job. Yes I still have a full time job. One of the reasons I started a work from home business is so I would have more leisure time with friends and family. But until I am making enough to quit my full time job, it does not look like that will happen.
Number 4 is security and not knowing how much money your work from home business is going to make from month to month. Also waiting for checks to show up in the mail that are a few days behind when you need to pay a bill or the mortgage can be an inconvenience. When you are working for someone else for a set amount of hours and a set hourly rate you know exactly what your income will be.
As for the advantages, well I think the advantages far out weigh the disadvantages.
My number 1 work from home advantage is the ability to work whenever I want anywhere I want. With a lap top computer I can pretty much do business anywhere In the world. No matter were I am, on vacation or on a business trip or whatever. The internet and today’s technology makes a work from home internet business my business of choice.
My number 2 work from home advantage is not having to commute to work every morning. We have all hard the phrases rat race, no commute required and work from home in your pajamas. I have actually worked in my pajamas on the internet with a hot cup of coffee. Knowing that you do not have to get up at 6:00 am to go to work in the morning is a beautiful feeling.
My number 3 work from home advantage is not having a boss to tell me what to do all the time. The only boss I have is my consciousness that tells me to get up off the couch and go write an article on my computer or look for places to submit my web site URL to.
And finally my number 4 work from home internet business advantage is the income potential. Basically the income potential for a work from home internet business is endless. It all depends on how hard you want to work and how much time you want to devote to your work from home internet business. And with the amount of people joining the internet community every year, the future is bright.

Do you know what is one of the main causes for failure in a home based business environment? It is the lack of persistence.
Many people lack persistence because they are not willing to keep on going when they see the first signs of defeat.
The majority of many people, when they first encounter defeat, tend to throw their goals, desires, and purposes overboard. They tend to give up at the first sign of “failing”, while very few keep on going until they reach their desired goals.
When a person starts a home based business opportunity of some sort, it is essential for them to never give up and stay persistent.
Many people will start something, like an internet business, and as soon as they don’t see the results that they were looking for, they do the most common thing and that is quitting. It is very important to keep going and to try different approaches.
You see, when I got my first site, http://www.talfighel.com, built for me about a year and a half ago, at first I didn’t see any results. I advertised here and there. I spend a lot of money on many advertising techniques that never did me any good but I learned that I have to keep on going and keep trying new things all the time until I do find my advertising niche.
Because of my persistence to try different adverting approaches and my burning desire to succeed, I am now just finding the right ways to get more traffic and more sales.
Now, persistence does not mean this:
You try one advertising strategy and it does not work well. You keep on doing the same thing over and over again. That's not the right word for being persistent. It is just plain silly. Why would anyone keep on doing the same mistake over and over again and never learn from it.
Persistence does mean:
You must try something else until you do find a strategy that does work well and then you can keep on doing it because it is bringing you the results that you are looking for.
So how do you develop a “persistent” attitude?
You must:
1. Have a burning desire to succeed. It is not a need. It is a MUST.
2. Picture yourself reaching your desired goals in your home business or online business.
3. Have faith that you will reach your goals.
4. Have something that can push you on a daily basis to do something. Maybe it is your job that you don’t like and this can be a great motivator to never give up. Maybe you want to improve your income, and knowing this will give you the ability to keep on going despite many failures along the way.
5. Tell yourself that you will succeed and you will do what ever it takes to make your business a success. You have to feed your subconscious mind with positive self –talk.
6. Make your own decision that this will work and don’t listen to negative people who will tell you that you should quit. Choosing to be your own boss working from home is YOUR decision and no one else’s.
7. Read motivational books and listening to tapes. This will give you the right motivation and encourage you to continue.
8. Associate with the right people who will guide, teach, and encourage you to follow through.
9. Make a commitment. This is one of my favorites. Once you make a commitment, there is no going back or quitting. Ok?
So stay persistent. Never give up. And reach for the stars. You will succeed.

It all sounded too good to be true. The 5 level deep payout structure would ensure a decent income after some heavy promoting but my intuition told me to do a quick search for the term "spedia scam" and see if there was any negative spedia information around. The results speak for themselves.
An abundance of warnings and people's negative experiences with spedia. The most common complaints seem to be that they don't pay. Other complains include system crashes and spam if you cancel your account.
The Spedia Terms of Service
The Spedia Terms of Service can be found at

http://www.spedia.net/sp_h_p_terms_of_service.htm. You must agree to these terms in order to participate in the Spedia Surf for Cash Program. It is a very interesting page. Especially clause #16 whereby you agree not to participate in a Class Action Law Suit against Spedia but you are "allowed" to make a claim as an individual.
Personally, I cannot see any one person taking Spedia to court for 30 bucks which they did not pay. If you cannot participate in a Class Action whereby thousands of individuals can make a claim with one court case and with one attorney, what chance have you got to get your money?
Spedia and Surf+ Scumware
It seems that by downloading and installing the spediabar, you are also installing a Scumware program called Surf+. This is not a good thing. The Surf+ Scumware has the ability to change plain text words on any web page into hyperlinks. These hyperlinks are inserted without the permission of the webmaster in order to hijack you onto another site. More about how Surf+ works here: http://www.scumware.com/wm2a.html.
Certain Spyware and Scumware programs will require special attention to be removed from your system because they cannot be removed by the regular add/remove programs method. If your computer has been infected with the Surf+ virus, you will need instructions to remove all invisible components from your system.

A Better Way to Make Money Online
It seems that even IF you find a legitimate Surf for Cash program, it will take ages to get even a $30 payout. I still think it is much easier to sell either your own products or other people's products and services via an affiliate program. To do this you will need your own website, register your own domain name, select a web hosting company and learn how to get traffic to your site.
Are You Wasting Time
It's time to ask yourself, "Am I wasting time on the Internet?" and "Does it really serve me to do what I am doing?".
If we are doing the same old things and not getting the desired results, it may be time to shift our thinking and open up to new ideas, or do some of the stuff we know we "should" do but have been to lazy to do it.

If you have been on the internet for awhile, you know that there are millions of people trying anything and everything to get your attention. They want in your wallet. It's a great big money grab out there folks, and the net has become the biggest marketing arena on the planet, driving whole industries and generating Billions of dollars in sales.
So what's the problem? Well, none if you are one of the small businesses with focus. A whole lot of problems if you lack focus.
There are myriad small business opportunities on the net today. And if you do your research and find something you want to associate with, or you create a product for a well-researched target market, you are well on your way to financial success. Or are you?
You see the more you become active on the net as either someone looking for the right opportunity, or as someone who has found the right opportunity already, the more you are bombarded with choices. Everyday you get emails saying that the next best thing since sliced bread has come along.
The new "thing" demands your attention and you get nervous that you might be missing out on another opportunity for financial success.
But don't you already have one? At least, haven't you been presented with several great opportunities in the last week? So why on earth take a serious look at yet another? Why fragment the time you need to spend on your current business with all the marketing it takes to get yet another off the ground and profitable?
What I am talking about here is something I call "Sign-up-Itis."
(Not to be confused with Sinusitis, which can be just as debilitating.)
It goes like this: You find your focus, you are fired up. All is good and you are ready to start working on the hundreds of little things you need to do to get traffic and make sales. You need to get good search engine positioning, you need a links campaign, you have to research ezines in your niche and place ads, you need to set up joint ventures, you need to create and update content on your site, set up a merchant account, a delivery system, and the list goes on from there.
Then you get an email from a friend or associate telling you that you HAVE to check out the latest and greatest. You do. It's an awesome opportunity. You look at your plate and it's already full with your current project, but the plate has a lot of things on it you really don't enjoy doing. It's a lot of work to make any business pay off, as you can see from the short list above.
"It's Much More Fun To Think About Success Than It Is To Do The Work It Takes To Achieve It"
But this NEW thing is exciting, fresh, new. It draws you in and it's MUCH more fun to think about success than it is to do the work it takes to achieve it, so you buy in. You get a ton of tools to start this new venture. It's all overwhelming, especially since you have gone back to your first venture and realized you now have TWO great things that can both make you money, but they BOTH need your attention on a grand scale in order to see profit.
Now, here is the part where most people give up. They say to themselves "Internet marketing is nothing more than a series of steps that I cannot complete. I am always excited when I get started on something, but when it comes down to DOING what I start, it gets hard and doesn't happen as fast as I would like it to."
Let me make one thing clear right now: It is not the net's fault for not providing us with real opportunity.
Opportunity abounds and is right there for us to snatch up and achieve success. Never let yourself fall into the trap of reasoning your way out of success. "It's not for me." "I can't do this - it's for people much better with computers and internet marketing than me."
The problem lies with your focus and your fear of success. You must CHOOSE the opportunity you are passionate about, or create a product you stand behind and love, and then hunker down for the long-haul! Make yourself do everything you are taught to do to build your business and build it - all the way or not at all.
It should be no surprise the next time you get an email with the next best thing inside. You should say to yourself "That's great! Another opportunity for someone has just been born! But I am busy with MY business and cannot take on another venture at this time."
We Do It On Purpose
Lack of focus is sometimes a purposeful self-defeating tactic your subconscious uses to keep you from success. Success is NOT a destination. It's a journey.
And that journey scares the hell out of 99% of normal, everyday people. So be it. It IS scary to think of radical life changes, even if they are for what you consider to be far better than your current situation!
But don't let a lack of focus and your fear of success tear you away from your dreams. USE your fear and confront it, right now. Today.
Make hard decisions and stick to them, then begin the process of working on a focused, tight marketing campaign to make whatever venture you choose the venture that sets you free.
Wear electronic blinders. Keep lean and mean and only take on new responsibilities that will be good for your CURRENT business.
Throw the rest in the trash.
We all know there are tons of opportunities out there. That is a fact. It's time now to get the stars out of your eyes, choose your niche, your product, your affiliate program or your MLM, and get to work. Make a vow not to stop until you are where you want to be financially.
The question is not "Can you really make money online?" This has been proven time and again over the years by thousands of people,many of whom you read about all the time.
The question is "Do you really want to be one of those people, or are you stuck in a cycle of constantly sabotaging your success with a lack of focus?"

How to Run A Successful Affiliate Program

There are many people who log onto the internet everyday looking for a way to make money online.
They start with all the best intentions, but unfortunately, before they know it they are getting bombarded with information and are simply spinning their wheels.
I completely understand this. There is so much internet marketing information online and once you get started it seems like “information overload”.
Therefore, I will try to keep this as simple and short as possible.
Many people will sign up with an affiliate program promoting the affiliate’s product or program. This makes sense. Starting as an affiliate marketer is probably the easiest way to get started online. There are many affiliate programs out there that will give you everything you need to promote their products or program…Well almost everything.
You see, many of these affiliate sites will give you a website, but you don’t own the site. It is a gateway site. You don’t even own the domain name for that matter.
Being part of one of these programs is not bad though. I belong to several. SFI is a perfect example. I joined their program and have several sites that they gave me to promote their products and their affiliate program.
But if you are truly going to make money with these types of sites you are going to have to do a lot more than simply sign up for their program.
It is simply unreasonable to think that people are going to just stumble upon your site and sign up for your program and start making you money.
There are a few things you need to do if you truly want to make an affiliate program work.
First of all, you must have your “own” web page with your “own” domain name and your “own” host. You will then have links from your “own” site to the other “gateway” site(s). You will promote your gateway site it, but you will promote it through your own site.
There are so many reasons for this I couldn’t possible fit it into this one article, but basically the site is yours to run the way you want to. Think of it this way…it is “your” store and you are selling “their” product.
Your web page could be designed as a short sales letter that focuses primarily on this one program if that is what you choose. Or, you could focus on several affiliate programs and products within the same market. For example, a sales letter with the top 3-5 money making opportunities.
THIS IS IMPORTANT: Either way, promoting one program/product or promoting several, you will not only want to own your own site, you definitely want to be able to “drop in” on potential customers from time to time. What I mean by that is you want to capture email addresses of people who visit your site.
To do so you need to give something away that is of enough value that people are willing to give up their email address and receive something from you week after week or at least month after month.
A newsletter/ezine is perfect for this. Send out a weekly or monthly newsletter on your topic that includes articles, tips, e-courses, bonuses etc. This way you can plug your programs over and over again (not just once).
I know this sounds like a lot…design your own web site and your own newsletter.
However, there are programs available that actually set everything up for you, including a website, an autoresponder, a pre-written newsletter, and even unlimited support.
Plug-in-Profit (PIPS) (http://www.money-teacher.com/pluginprofitsite.htm) is a perfect example. You can have a web site that site is 100% yours to change however you wish. The site comes ready to promote 5 different programs. You could work with as many of them as you want and you can also add your own.
You also get a pre-written newsletter and autoresponder that is also 100% customizable. The newsletter is obviously designed to promote the programs that come with the web site, but you can change it however you wish.
PIPS may or may not be what you are looking for; however, if you truly want to be successful online you will definitely need your own web site and your own newsletter.

There are many, many, opportunities online, but here are the 5 factors you really need to consider, to guarantee your success:
1. Set your goals. As with any business you need to set goals. Goals help you visualize where you want to go, and keep you motivated when you get up in the morning. You goal may be to earn $500 or $10000 a month, it may be to take that dream vacation, or it may be to give up your job. These are all great goals. It is imperative that you write them down and reread them often. You need a short term goal - e.g monthly goal, to keep you motivated from day to day and a longer term goal 1-2 years - to keep you on track and prevent you from chucking it in. I am confident that if you adopt a positive attitude and embrace your goals then you will soon be making money online.
2. Take time to research. As I alluded to earlier there are many people making money online - and there are thousands of different businesses that you can try. The internet is a mine field of information and “making money online” opportunities are not difficult to find. However you will need to decipher the genuine opportunities from the scams. Many online promises are just methods to extract money from you. Some do's and don'ts
DON'T fall for the “get rich quick schemes” that promise huge returns in record time DO try and email or telephone for more information DO search online for feedback on the opportunity e.g. try name of opportunity + scam DON'T part with money without consulting a friend you can trust and/or sleeping on it.
3. Find something that you like. You're the boss now - so do yourself a favor and choose something you enjoy. This will greatly enhance your chances of success. A few things to consider: Do you enjoy writing? Do you enjoy talking to people? Do you enjoy working on the computer? Do you have a flair for sales? Are there particular things that you are passionate about e.g sports, music? Do you want to be contactable 24x7? Do you want to have flexible/fixed hours? Personally I like to work on my computer on my own time and my choice of internet business matches this. Find out what suits you, and you can weed out the business ventures which are not for you. Don't settle for second best - choose something you are comfortable with.
4. Find something worth your while. While it is a good idea to avoid the sales pitch that promises the sun, moon, and stars; it is also important that you don't take the safe option - that guarantees $5 an hour for sending emails, filling our surveys, or licking stamps. These amount to you underselling yourself, because the opportunities of making money on the internet are so much greater. Look for systems which offer a good monthly return for a few hours work a day - if you find something with a residual income all the better.
5. Anything for an easier life! One of my motivations for venturing into internet marketing was to create an easier life for myself. As I sat in my day job I used to think - “There must be easier ways to make money” - and there are! Earning a living online means that you have the luxury of working from home and choosing your own hours. It is important that you can exploit these perks, by being able to take time off, take extra vacations and spend more time with your family. You need to avoid the 40-50 hours a week for the sake of your sanity.

The Top Ten eBay Buyer Personalities

In my years of selling on eBay I have come across all sorts of people. For the most part these people have been very nice and easy to deal with. Having said that, there are always a small percentage, like in any business online or offline, who you'll have some degree of problem with. As explained in my book "eBay Marketing Wholesale SourcePak" you will need to be as polite as you possibly can and have a little patience when dealing with these people. Below you will find my Top Ten List of eBay Buyer Personalities and how to handle them.
10 - The Manipulator There will be times when you have an auction end with no bids. When this happens watch out for the Manipulator. This is an individual who will email you once you auction ends wanting to purchase your item off eBay at a ridiculously low price. He/she will often try to manipulate you into believing the product will not sell but he/she will be glad to take it off your hands. Forget about them! Do Not sell the item to them. Instead relist the item for auction on eBay with a new headline. If he/she wants it bad enough, they will have to get the item through your auction. And trust me 99% of the time your item will sell.
9 - The Impatient Buyer This is someone who has won your auction today and is wondering why it wasn't shipped yesterday. This individual wants what was purchased fast, real fast. Just have patience, be polite and explain your shipping process to him/her. Getting the product out quickly with a thank you note for purchasing will give you a happy customer.
8 - The Disappointed Buyer There are some people you just can not please, not even if you were to stand on your head. They will be disappointed no matter what you do. Sometimes these people can be down right rude and take up a lot of your time. Learn to recognize this type of person and don't get caught up in an on slot of emails. Remember that time is money, and once you have done all you can do to rectify their problem move on. If the emails continue simply ignore them.
7 - The Invisible Buyer This is someone who has won your auction but you never hear from them. Ever! They pay you right on time without any problems. So you send the product they won off to them. And that's it! They do not leave feedback, and do not return any emails. They just disappear into thin air. If you send a couple of follow up emails asking if they received their item and requesting positive feedback and you get no response, just forget them and move on.
6 - The Interrogator This individual could drive you crazy. It's not their fault, they just have questions. Lots of Questions! For these people even if every question imaginable is answered in your auction description, they'll still manage to find a reason to email you a question. Be weary of this type of individual they can, and will waste a lot of your time if you let them. On your first email to them be polite answer their question then refer them back to your auction description telling them all the answers are there. Suggest they read it again. Don't get caught up in email after email. Always remember that time is money, and if you've done your auction description correctly there should be no questions left to ask. Your auction surfer should be ready to make a bid.
5 - The Late Payer This customer has no clue about deadlines and they really don't seem to care about them either. Their attitude is you'll get paid when I am ready to pay you. You will need to set guidelines for when payment is due. If payment is not received you may choose to give your buyer one extension. Be specific giving him/her a date as to when the balance is due. Also tell them if payment is not received by that date you will have no other choice but to relist the item for auction. Sometimes a month or so down the road you'll end up getting a check in the mail from this person with a note as to why they were late. Simply return the payment with an explanation that the item was re-listed as he/she failed to meet the payment deadline and it has been sold to someone else.
4 - The Deadbeat There is no buyer more irritating than the one who is always telling you the check is in the mail. Of course the check never arrives. Unfortunately there is not much you can do about this. Like above give them a deadline and if they don't make it relist the item for auction again.
3 - The "I'm Sooo Confused" Buyer This customer does want to buy from you. Really, they do! If they could only figure out how! How to bid, how to pay, how to... All this high tech computer stuff is just way to confusing for them. Have patience and be polite. Explain what they should do next. If you find no matter how you explain things it just doesn't register with them, suggest they read over eBay's tutorials. Remember your time is money and you can only spend so much time with any potential customer before you must move on.
2 - The Spender This individual can spend a lot of money with you. And often will return as a repeat buyer usually purchasing a little of everything you have up for auction. This person will also spend $100.00 in merchandise in order to save $10.00 on shipping. Bless him/her!
1 - The Perfect Customer This individual is simply a Happy Person. He/she has won your auction and they are just ecstatic about it. The great thing about this type of buyer is if you run into a problem they are always understanding and easy to deal with. If looked after correctly, very often these people will become a customer for life. Now, don't we wish all customers were like this.
So, there you have it. The Top Ten eBay Buyer Personalities. If you already sell on eBay I'm sure you will recognize some of these personality traits in your own customers. If you're just getting started with your eBay Auction Business no doubt you'll be running into these people soon. Whatever personality your day brings you, always be patience, polite and just have fun with it.

It has been written in almost all articles about affiliate marketing that it is among the greatest ways to earn money online.
For those who didn’t know what it is, affiliate marketing is a cooperative effort between the merchants and online publishers or affiliates, whereby an affiliate is rewarded for every visitor or customer provided through his effort. The moment a customer is gained, a part of the profit from that customer will go to the affiliate as a commission. There are so many lies, half-truths, and misguided misinformation out there about online marketing that it's driving me crazy!
I just finished reading yet another ebook by yet another "successful" Internet marketing guru. It kills me because the only thing most of these gurus are successful at is selling themselves and their "snake oil" to unsuspecting business people.
They don't know squat about marketing a business on the Internet. But they do know how to push buttons. So these self-proclaimed "experts" LIE to you just to sell you their latest crap… books, tapes, and seminars or whatever it is they think they can get people to buy.
(Hell, I wouldn't be surprised is someone out there isn't selling the "Color by Number Marketing Kit" that comes with its own crayons!)
These gurus make it sound sooooo easy to make money online. They say stuff like, "You don’t need a computer connection" or "You don’t need any experience," or "You don’t need a lot of money."
According to them, you don’t even need a brain! You just need to BUY THEIR PRODUCT and you'll make a gazillion dollars online in 30 days… or less.
If you believe in that crap, you need to have your head examined!
I got news for you, Bucko. Marketing is work… and successful, bring-home-the-big-profits marketing is HARD work.
That's because marketing isn't a crapshoot or a game of chance. It's a business. And just like any other LEGITIMATE business, you need to invest time, effort and energy to make it grow into a successful enterprise.
And it even takes even MORE ENERGY to maintain that growth and manage your success for the long term.
Now it's definitely true that the "wonders" of technology make it easier to succeed with an online business than a retail store. And even a one-person operation can utilize email, autoresponders, and the Internet's global marketing capabilities to grow rich.
But although it's easier online, it’s still work.
I know it's work because it's the work I do! I am the mentor for the some of the most super-successful websites/internet business people on the planet. I'm the behind-the-scene the guy, helping “little” businesses that are generating $5,000.00 to $10,000.00 a month and "big" businesses with annual revenue figures of $1,000,000.00 and MORE.

That’s just complete B.S. If you're flat broke and one paycheck from homeless, you’re gonna have a very tough time making it. Of course you need money to get started. Whaddya think… your smile is gonna pay the rent?
Now you don’t need a lot of money to succeed online, it's true… certainly less than it would take to build and open your own Widget Shop on Main Street. But you do need some operating capital… and it stands to reason that having a large bankroll couldn't hurt.
When your pockets are fat and your budget can include more money for “smart” marketing, you'll be able to see (and enjoy) the results of your efforts even faster.
In short, it takes money to make money.
It takes money to educate yourself… to research the marketplace... and to develop your product or service.
It takes money to get a domain name, it takes money to host your site. It takes cold-hard cash to hire a designer to program your site and a copywriter to write a killer sales letter for you. You even need money in order to get a merchant account so you can accept the money your website generates.
And most importantly, it takes money to DRIVE traffic to your site.
Yeah… I know… I know! There are all those "free" traffic-generating ideas that you can pursue. I do a lot of them myself… but I don't trust my success to traffic I can't control.
Most of the time, it costs me money to drive quality traffic to my site, and it will cost you, too. Could be Pay-Per-Click, could be running an ezine ad, could be doing some sort of offline promotion….
But the bottom line is -- you need to have a bottom line. Especially in the beginning, your cash-flow will be in one direction: OUT.

This is almost as ridiculous as "you don't need money." Give me a break. Sales aren't made to the man in the moon… they're made to people on your list. People you have carefully cultivated and "primed."
You need to build a list because your money is IN the list!
You need to build a “herd” as quickly as humanly possible… but don’t purchase one of those deals where you "GET A MILLION EMAILS ON ONE CD." (That's not a list -- that's spam-in-the-making.)
And don’t do the co-registration deal. With this approach, where people go to a site to subscribe to a particular newsletter that they want, they find a checkbox (or other response mechanism) "advertising" your offer. If they're interested, they check the box to agree to receive mailings from you.
This sounds like a good way to get traffic because unlike spam, you've been given permission to make contact. The problem is these people don’t know you from squat. To them, the checkbox is just an invitation for another form of spam.
The online sales game -- any successful sale, in fact -- is about connecting with the right buyer and make the right offer. The right buyer comes from the right list.
The best approach to list-building is strictly OLD SCHOOL: build it from scratch. That way, your list people are "pre-qualified" from the start. They KNOW you right from the beginning. They want to hear from you. They want to learn more from you. They want to listen to what you have to say.
And with a list of people like that, it doesn't take long before they'll want to BUY from you

Crap. Crap. Crap.
Let's try a little role-playing game. Pretend you and I were thinking about starting an offline business together. What if I said to you, "Oh, don't worry… all we need to do to succeed is open our store. We don’t need any products or services. But we'll still make oodles of money!"
You'd think I was crazy, right?
Well, then why in the world would you believe the same line of crap when it's being fed to you on the Internet by some expert whose credentials can't be verified?
Commerce is all about products and services and if you want to do business, you NEED a quality product or service to sell. Preferably multiple products and services so that you can back-end sell your existing customers and increase their value to you exponentially by turning them into customers for life.
Do I hear you asking, "Dan, what about those super-affiliates who are making a lot of money promoting other’s products and services?"
That's a good question because yes, there are some exceptions to this rule. But the list of exceptions who do well with someone else's product or service is very short. Plus there are a lot of potential risks to being the middleman.
For example, let me ask you this: what if that company you’re promoting products for go out of business? What if they change their products? Where does that leave you?
The answer: High and dry.
And I can’t even begin to tell you how many affiliate "horror stories" I've heard. It's common to hear about vendors not paying affiliates on-time. Or to learn that customers may bypass the affiliate link, so you don’t get paid.
Vendors tracking software screws up, there are "technical difficulties" so you don’t get credited for the sale… and on, and on, and on.
And here's a killer: more often than not, you don’t get to keep the customer, they do. Many affiliate programs are set up so that you only get credit for the first sale a consumer makes. After that, all the profits stay with the vendor.
They keep all the back-end profits.
And when they back-end sell their products and services, you don’t get a dime. It doesn't matter that your links are making the vendor rich. The effort is yours, but the profit is theirs.
When it comes to my income… I'm a control freak! But affiliate programs are out of your control. Your financial well-being is in someone else's hands… and there's nothing you can do to manage your success.
You can't test different things on your site because it’s NOT your site. You can't change what's not working because it's not yours to change. All you can do is cross your fingers and hope for the best…
Hardly a recipe for success, I think you'll agree.
I am not saying you can’t promote other peoples products, but very often you should do it as a back-end, not front-end. You front-end your own stuff, and you can back-end other products and services.
There's still one more problem with promoting other people's stuff: when you stop promoting, your income also stops. You have to constantly be on the lookout to find the NEXT red-hot product and constantly be inking the next great deal.

Of course, you need experience to succeed online! The only job in the world that doesn't need experience is "virgin."
If you want to make money, you need to get hip as quickly as humanly possible. You need to figure out what works, what doesn't, and how you can use all the "tricks of the trade" to build your success.
That’s why having a mentor works. Working with someone who's "been there and done that" can save you time and money.
Your income can only grow to the extent that you do. You must educate yourself… and you must be open to the process.
Be prepared to make mistakes, try new things, and push yourself beyond your safe, secure comfort level. Do whatever it takes to earn your Masters at the School of Hard Knocks. Learn your lessons and develop the skill sets you need to make the kind of money you want to make.
On this season's The Apprentice, Donald Trump put two teams in a head-to-head competition: book smarts and street smarts. You don't have to play for one team or another, you can take the best of both worlds for your success strategy.
It pays to be educated and street-wise. Knowledge comes from books… and experience.

This really is more of a medium-sized lie. It's definitely true that you can be a master online marketer even if you don't programming, HTML codes… and all that stuff. (Hey, you can watch television without understanding how it works!)
However… while you don’t need to know the how-to, you DO need to know what needs to be done and what YOU need for your site. If you don't, you're as "at risk" for being had as a 17-year old car owner who visits the Bad Guys Auto shop.
I'm the first to admit that before I got smart, I was screwed-over and taken advantage of by several dishonest webmasters. They did a lot of unnecessary programming and sent me a hefty bill. They charged me a lot of money and gave me crap.
I definitely overpaid… but I didn't know any better. But you can be damn sure I rectified that situation with a little "quick study."
I found out for myself that it doesn’t hurt to have a little of technical knowledge. If you're familiar with basic HTML -- at least when you want make changes to your site, you can do so instantly.
There are many things that only a programming professional will be able to do for you. But it's nice when you don’t have to go to your webmaster and pay them per hour for a fix that could easily be a do-it-yourselfer.
If you're the "exception that proves the rule" and are making money hand-over-fist as a super-marketer, you may disagree that the four big lies are lies at all. Congratulations on your success… but take it from me.
For the average… even the above-average person… online marketing is not a get-rich-quick scheme. It’s a business and you have to treat it like a business. So if you're not yet rolling in dough, but would like to be part of the Internet moneymaking machine…
Don’t buy into all the hype. Think it through. Use your common sense. Don't try and get rich quick or you may find yourself in the poor house! BUT… you CAN and you WILL make money if you’re willing to do what it takes.

If you want to make money online a good strategy that won't cost you a dime is to write articles that relate to your product or service.
Search Engines are constantly on the "look out" for freshly written content that has been submitted online. So how do you come up with ideas for your next article? Here are several suggestions that may help...

Hang out in online forums. Watch what people are talking about. Look at the questions they are asking. The topics that are bringing the greatest number of visitors would make for an excellent article.
Take a look at what information is being broadcast on TV, radio, newspapers, and online. This information is usually a hot topic.
Read blogs. What are people posting about? What kind of comments are they leaving? What questions do they have? Blogs are the hot internet marketing medium right now and you can literally find them everywhere on any topic. This is an excellent source for your next article idea.
Survey your current customers or website visitors. Ask them what kind of article they would like to see in your next ezine or published on your website.
Check bookstores online. What are the top sellers? This can be a good way to come up with an article that catches the attention of what people are reading.
Be seasonal. Write about what is going on that time of year. Holidays, festivals, sports, graduations, etc. all make for an article that someone will want to read.
Write an article about a current fad. There is always something that is hot at the time and could make for interesting reading from you.
Keep track of what your customers and prospects are asking you. If you get an email or phone call with a question this may make for a good article. Others may have the same question, but are afraid to ask it.
Start a swipe file on what others are writing about. If it is of interest to you it will probably be of interest to others. Never plagiarize the work of others, but you can certainly get good ideas this way. The biggest benefit of a swipe file is having it handy to refer back to over and over whenever you are ready to write your article and are not sure what you want to write about. If you still find it hard to write about your idea, you can hire a professional to ghostwrite it for you. The costs are minimal and, considering what's at stake, it could be the best investment you ever make.

For me to demonstrate this, I will lead off with a little story, dating back a couple years.
Two years ago, when I first started online, my biggest nightmare was trying to figure out what program to use to build my websites, and which hosting company to house my web pages at.
I was always chasing the fast highway to riches. Finally, I could see why they call it the Internet Highway, I was on a highway and I didn't realize that I could control my own speed. I stopped chasing the Internet Highway and started studying patterns online.

First, I believe the change came when I bought one affiliate marketing manual that really hit the spot, no, not one, actually two, but one was the catalyst. It was very easy to understand and read, stipulating exactly how to build website that makes affiliate programs earn cash for you.
My vision of how you can make money online changed.
I finally started to realize that every website I build online has the potential of earning me $500 monthly.
That is where I created the term: "My e-appartment complex."
My vision leads me to building successful e-apartments, one after the other until my e-complex has a total of 100 e-apartments. But, because, of greed, you will have to be realistic and start by creating your "first" e-apartment. This article will help you get started, following the successful path not many wish to travel, while knowing that, if they do, success is guaranteed.

1) You Will Have To Master Keyword Research
I just can't emphasize the importance of keyword research. If you don't know what people are searching for then, how in the world is anyone ever going to find your website online.
You must, and I repeat, yes, must, learn to build your website around keywords or keywords phrases that is being searched for online. No successful website online was built without targeting the right keywords.

2) You Will Have To Use A Website Builder That Is Easy To Master.
In short, when your just starting out online, you have to learn how to build your own websites. You will need a website builder you can master n a week, you can't spend months online learning HTML, so, it will have to be WYSIWYG (WYSIWYG, stands for What You See Is What You Get). In other words, acts like your word processor where you just paste the text needed.

3) Discover Where to Get the Cheapest Hosting.
Today, anyone online can open a reseller hosting account and start there own web hosting company for just $ 25 to $50 monthly. But, the question is: Are they "techie" enough where trouble shooting is concerned?
You have to host you site with a company that has been around at least 5 years, because they are established and know the ins-an-outs of what it takes to be an online web host, and have a very friendly customer service.

4) You Must Use some Kind Of Ad Tracking Software.
Ad tracking is the one thing you must master online if you want to build successful websites online. You will have to make small changes to your site and just check to see if your site performs better or worse. If you feel your headline isn't pulling, just change the headline and monitor what happens.

The nice part about online businesses is, that you can make change instantly and have results the same day. No need to wait months for results, like the offline world. Your changes can be tracked and that makes it easy to constantly improve your websites.

5) Find Something That Excite You And Put Away The Plastic.
Once, you find your niche online, ditch the credit card. Take your time and study what is needed for you to be successful online, sign up for a couple forums and get active asking questions.
Your online presence will start to make you a professional in your field. Study your manual, going over it more than once, read between the lines and set your vision on the end results you want to accomplish. Just set sail, and keep focus.

In any human activity, just get going and you will notice that what once seemed impossible, is now simple for you.

As I become more successful with my internet business I have become interested in ways to move my business to the next level.

Besides pumping more money into advertising it occured to me that increasing my closing percentage on my websites to the visitors I am getting would be a free way to make more money without spending more money to do it.

Writing better copy in my ads and on my websites itself surely would help me reach this goal.
I know in off-line sales that it is not only what you say, but how you say it. To achieve the same results without the benefit of voice inflection will require getting my prospective customer into an almost hypnotic state of mind.

First let's define what an hypnotic state of mind is.

If you search for Work-at-Home or Make Money Online, you will have literally millions of websites to visit that promise you the next best way to get rich... for a fee...
You can spend hundreds of dollars researching all of the business opportunities on the Internet. But more times than not, the money you spend only supplies information on everything else you need to buy to get started.
Well have no fear! I am going to show you some of the secrets I use to creating income streams with no money down!
I realize that a lot of you are living paycheck to paycheck. Everything coming in, quickly goes right back out. My intention of writing this article is to help you break out of this cycle with Affiliate Programs.

What are Affiliate Programs?
Affiliate Programs are used to promote a product or service through a cost-per-action advertising model. Amazon.com built a huge following by utilizing Affiliate Programs. A website owner simply put a unique link on their website that Amazon.com provided them. Banner ads or text ads are used to drive the traffic to the affiliate website. For example, one website might say "Click here to order Sean's Latest Book." When someone clicks on the link, it will go to exactly where they can order the book at Amazon.com.
High traffic websites benefit greatly by this business model since they can drive a lot of people to the affiliate websites which results in a lot of commissions being earned.
But what if I don't have a website?!

I know, you don't have a website, right? Or maybe you do, but you don't get a lot of traffic? I have good news...

BLOGS = FREE TRAFFIC
Over the last couple years, a new type of website has come onto the scene. They are called BLOGS. A blog is like a personal diary of articles that you post that people can read and comment on.
A couple examples:http://fortunedreams.blogspot.com http://ulosefast.blogspot.com
You can use a BLOG to drive visitors to affiliate links without having to have a website. If you look at the fortunedreams blog above, you will notice that at the end of every article is a link that says "Click here for FREE Information on Working at Home-FortuneDreams.com"
If you click on that link, it will go to an affiliate link which redirects you to a free survey to fill out.
For every person that completes that free survey, I get paid $2.25. Not too bad, eh?

So How Do I Do It?

Step 1: Open a free affiliate account. Go to http://www.magmoney.com and join the affiliate program there. This affiliate program will allow you to earn $2.25 for every free survey completed.
Step 2: Login to your affiliate account. At the top of the screen, you will see some TABS. Click on the tab that says "CREATE YOUR LINKS." Then click on the link that says "CLICK HERE To get banner and text link code to advertise our three different websites."
The first website listed will allow you to refer other people to join the MagMoney Affiliate Program. For every person that signs up through your link, you will get paid 75 cents for every person THEY get to complete a free survey. (You might not want to promote this one until later - when you have a friend that wants to do what you are doing... You can then get paid on their efforts!)
The second website listed will allow you to send traffic to a weight loss website. If you want to create a blog about weight loss, then you will want to use this for your affiliate link.
The third website listed will allow you to send traffic to a Work at Home website. If you want to create a blog about Working at Home, then you will want to use this for your affiliate link.
Step 3: Decide which website you want to promote from Step #2, and click on the CLICK HERE that is next to it to create your unique affiliate link.
Once you do that, you will get a list with your unique affiliate link along with about 10 banner ads. Disregard the banner ads since we will not be using them on the Blog.
Step 4: Write down the affiliate link that is listed under the heading "Basic Affiliate Url:".
If you are doing a weight loss blog, your link would look something like this:
http://www.mailorderwork.com/gl/g.o/USERNAME/http://www.ulosefast.com
(Except all on one line.)
Step 5: Go to http://www.Blogger.com and create a free Blog account.
Step 6: Go ahead and create your first blog, whether it is for Work at Home or Weight Loss.
Step 7: Post articles to your Blog with your affiliate link posted at the end of every article you post. (Refer back to http://fortunedreams.blogspot.com to get an idea of what to post.)

Do the same thing I did with the "Click here for FREE Information on Working at Home-FortuneDreams.com" But make sure you link it back to YOUR unique affiliate link that you wrote down from Step #4.

Where Do I Find Articles?
The easiest way would be to simply copy them from one of my blogs listed in the examples above. Or visit one of the free article websites such as http://www.SubmitYourArticle.com . There are literally thousands of articles for the taking. You will want to search for articles that fit the topic of the link you are promoting.

For example, if you are promoting the Work at Home link, you would want articles pertaining to Work at Home.

Step 8: Promote your Blog! There are hundreds of Blog Directories and RSS Directories that you can submit to that are free of charge. When you create a blog at http://www.Blogger.com, you also get a free RSS feed of your Blog. You simply add /atom.xml to the end of your Blog.
For example: The blog http://fortunedreams.blogspot.com/ would be http://fortunedreams.blogspot.com/atom.xml as an RSS feed.

This allows you to submit it to all the RSS and Blog Directories that you can find...

Step 9: VERY IMPORTANT: After EVERY article that you post to your blog, go to http://www.pingomatic.com and submit your blog. Click on ALL the Services to Ping and then submit pings.

This tells many of the popular Blog directories that you have a new article posted. The more articles you post, the higher your ranking (and the more traffic they will send you!)
So be sure to do this after every article you post.

Step 10: Post new articles on your Blog several times a day. Try to post at least a dozen or more new articles on a daily basis to achieve the best results.

So there you have it! A completely, absolutely free way to start generating income with the Internet from the comfort of your own home...

Of course you can repeat the process over and over again creating as many blogs as you want. You can also use this method with any of the hundreds of other affiliate programs on the Internet.

Utilizing this method, you should be able to build up an extra income from several hundred dollars a month to several thousand - depending on how hard you work at it.
Now that you are earning a little bit of pocket money, put $250 aside for a special opportunity to turn it into hundreds of thousands of dollars with the ultimate leverage!

I guess human nature leads us to this about every 30 - 50 years.
As a history major, I studied the gold rush of 1849, the 19th century oil booms, the stock market hustles of the late 1920's, the get rich-quick mail order schemes of the 1950's and 60's and now the "Internet" gold rush of the late 1990's and early 21st century.

When people perceive someone else getting rich with little or no effort, they jump on the band wagon seeking fame and fortune.

In reality, in any "gold rush," the ones who really get rich represent the exception.
Unfortunately, people perceive those "exceptions" as the rule, rather than the special cases they actually represent.

But, if you're bound and determined that you can be one of the "chosen few" who get rich online, the following tips will save you years of frustration.

** Little Oil Wells **
Don't try to get rich online with one gold or oil "strike!"
Most people I know who do very well online operate multiple websites targeting multiple niche markets.

They sell many products and make their money by creating multiple streams of income rather than depending on a single website to stake their claim for online riches.

** Solve Problems **
People go online to solve problems.
Whether they need to improve their job interview skills or find a winter coat and hat for their Chihuahua, they want to find products or knowledge they don't currently possess.

How to write a killer sales letter.

I sit down and look at my notebook. Then, I put myself into the ‘zone’.
That’s how I start to write web copy that sells.
Whether you agree with me or not, your web copy will determine whether your product’s going to sell online or not.
Simple reason. In an offline sales pitch or presentation, you get to interact with your prospect. You get to touch him. He gets to see you personally.
But not online. No, no, no. It all depends on the words on your site. See how powerful words are?
I’m not saying I’m a guru at web copy. There are many other copywriters who are far better than me. Many. But I’ve written my own web copy and it’s selling. And at the same time, I’ve been hired to write for others.
Keep on reading on how I write killer web copy and you can pick up any of the tips.
The first part to write a copy, you MUST be in the ‘zone’.
What the heck is the ‘zone’? The ‘zone’ is like… the mood. You see, writing a great copy is like an artist painting a beautiful picture. When you are in the ‘zone’, your hand can’t stop typing and your mind keeps on coming up with amazing ideas to write.
Like, I’m in the ‘zone’ when I write this article.
How to be in the ‘zone’? I’m not sure how you can achieve that, but for me, I put in a lot of passion to write a killer copy and I look into the future to see how this copy will sell like crazy.
That’s how I get into the ‘zone’.
Once you are in the zone, keep on writing. Don’t stop. Even though, you know you are writing wrong grammar or putting in weird ideas. Just keep on writing.
Then, after it’s finished, read it all over again. This time, you’ll pick up the mistakes and you’ll add in more ideas. Continue doing this until you are satisfied with your work. Finally, edit your work.
When you start your copy, your headline is one of the most important parts of the copy.
Some copy writers write tons of headlines before they start. For me, I’ll write about 5 headlines and read it over several times. Then, I’ll pick the best and fine tune it at least 5-10 times before I decide to use it.
One more part of writing copy; don’t feel bad ‘borrowing’ some ideas from successful copy you’ve seen.
Get a swipe file of the best copy you can find.
And the last thing you need to keep in mind when writing a killer copy is this:
“What’s the end result the reader will get if they buy from you?”
Your copy MUST sell hope and benefits to the reader if you want them to buy anything after reading your copy.
Now go write your killer copy.

Formula To Achieve Success Online.

I’m writing this article because I thought you might want to know my formula for success for my online business.
This sounds very simple and yet, it might change your whole mindset. It applies when you are building your own online business.
Throughout my journey to achieve success, I’ve encountered many people who struggled to achieve success online. Most of them ask me questions like, ‘how to achieve success’.
Or questions like, ‘how to make more money from the internet’.
What’s the formula to achieve online success?
Ok, read on and I’ll reveal it.
The formula is simple. When you are working, you must have in mind that ultimately what you want to achieve from your online business is this:
Work less, earn more.
But first, you must understand this formula in order to achieve that.

Here’s the formula:
Assuming you are working 8 hours a day, and you are getting X result (X can be any amount of money you are getting now.)
Where most people failed to achieve success is, they try to earn X + Y (Y can be any amount of extra money you want to get) without finding a way to work less first. In another words, finding a way to work less while still getting X result.
In order for you to get Y result, you should find ways to work less than 8 hours first and still be getting X result. Let’s say 6 hours.
Once you able to achieve that, only then can you consider how to find ways to get Y result.
In a nutshell,

First step:
Work 8 hours (or whatever your existing working hours are) and get X result.

Second step:
Find ways to work 6 hours and still get X result.

Third step:
Work 8 hours again but get X + Y results.

Once you achieve this, your next step is to find ways on how to achieve X + Y results by working only 6 hours instead of 8 hours. Once you find that, only than you can think about getting Z result (Z can be any amount of extra money you want to have).

So, repeat the whole process:

First step:
Work 8 hours get X + Y results.

Second step:
Find ways to work 6 hours and still get X + Y results.

Third step:
Work 8 hours again but get X + Y + Z results.

Keep on repeating this process until you get the maximum results you can get (this can be A+B+C+X+Y+Z).

At some stage, you’ll probably reach the optimum of getting the results and you can hardly earn more by working 8 hours a day.

Once you achieve this, congratulations.
Now, what you need to do is to find ways to WORK LESS but still get the same results.
So at the end, you’ll be able to WORK LESS And EARN MORE.

People fail to achieve online success because they don’t know or understand this simple formula and practice it!

This formula stressed managing your fundamentals before engaging yourself to earn more. People failed to achieve more results because they try to earn more without learning how to maintain and work less first. So, they’ll end up working more hours each day.

That’s why, you can see many people becoming more stressed when their business increases.
I’ve been practicing this formula. Each day when I work, I’ll look into my existing business and find ways to reduce the work. Once I got that, only then I’ll think on how to make more money.
So, each month, I’m making more money but working less or putting the same amount of time invested. This is how you can achieve success without getting more stress in life.

What you should be doing now is go look at your job or business and apply this formula if you want to achieve success in the long term.

True or False: You CAN Make Money While You Sleep

It’s a crying shame really. So many people have tried to follow the Internet dream. They’ve heard the stories of others who quit their day jobs, wake up whenever they choose, take leisurely lunches with friends, shop for hours on end without one worry about how to pay for their purchases, buy new cars and pay cash for them, and make money hand over fist while they sleep. Naturally, these people would drool over the thought of being able to do the same for themselves.
However, as the landslide of people all across the globe began to flock to the ‘Net much like they did to California in the gold-rush days, they find that making money while you sleep might be a myth. They wonder if they’ve just been led astray by wicked, evil people with nothing better to do than make fools out of innocent, hardworking folks.
What is the answer? Can you make money online? CAN you make money while you sleep? I don’t mean an extra $200 a month to pay for groceries, but a real living. If so, how do you go about it?
It’s True! I’m Doing It Myself!
First of all, it’s not a myth. I can honestly tell you that I am making a full-time living online. And yes, there have been many mornings where I’ve awakened, turned on my computer, and found notifications of sales that occurred during the night. I AM making money while I sleep, and you can, too.
Let me tell you what I think probably happened to generate this long-standing myth.
The early Internet pioneers discovered ways to make automated income. They realized this was a wonderful thing and began to spread the news to everyone they knew. Then, however, those unscrupulous types (you know... the jerks) saw this as an easy way to make a fast buck. They began preaching that making automated income online was as easy as pouring yourself a glass of water. In essence, they told half the story. As more and more people tried to make a living online and failed, the promise of making money while you sleep became fiction instead of fact.
So How Do You Do It?
What’s the real truth? How can you make a full-time living online just like me? There are several ways. Let me give you the unvarnished gospel when it comes to online business. You may not like what you hear, but it is fact, not fluff.
ACTION STEP 1

Plan, Plan, Plan - It won’t happen overnight. Nothing good ever does. In the beginning, you’re going to create a plan then be ready to work that plan. You often hear about throwing up a website and making money while you sleep. Technically, yes, that’s all there is to it. But... how does that site get up on the ‘Net?
You have to create your site or have someone else create it. That means you have to take the time to learn professional website development (PLEASE, don’t create some junky, homemade-looking site!), or you have to pay someone who already knows how to create websites. And what will you have on your site? Your own products? (Having your own e-products is highly recommended.) Someone else’s products? You’ll need to decide before your site is created.
How will people pay for the products they buy from your site? Do you have a merchant account? Will you become an affiliate for someone else so you don’t need a payment system?
Will you go for high search engine rankings or rely on word-of-mouth, PPC ads, and other types of paid advertising? If you want good search engine optimization, you’ll have to plan for that upfront. Again, you’ll have to take time to learn how to do it or pay someone else who already knows how.
Before you take one more step toward launching your own Web business, find the answers to the questions above.
ACTION STEP 2

Be Ready to Work - Once your site is ready to launch, how will people find you? How, exactly, will you drive qualified visitors to your site? Will you use organic (free) search engine listings? Will you use Pay-Per-Click search engine ads? Will you buy ezine ads? Do you have other means for getting customers to visit your site? People won’t just come out of the blue, you’ll have to bring them to your site somehow.

A lot of people dream of starting their own home based business. They dream of setting their own hours, working when they want to work and with whom. The reality is that very few of these people ever take the time to ensure that they have the right skill set - the right tools - to make the leap to a home-based enterprise.
The first major pitfall that most new home-based business owners face is a lack of scheduling discipline. They just don't plan out their work days. This can cause problems in two ways, under-working and overworking.
Let's look at the first one, "under-working." It's very easy to sit at home, on the ol' PC surfing the web. You might intend on working on your new website or putting up auctions on eBay, but, before you know it, you've spent the entire day reading email and surfing for the latest news and gossip. Sure, you were online and you were doing something, but the things you were doing are not the things that will put a dime in your bank account.
Overworking is pretty easy to understand. Some people simply don't know how to keep business hours. When they work from home, the temptation is there to "work 'til you drop." That's not good, especially if you start a home a based business online on the side and still work a day job. If you spend all your time working, you'll soon feel that you're never getting any "down time," and burnout is sure to follow. Believe me, I know all about this one.
Here's the solution. You must be very disciplined in planning your day. Write down what you need to accomplish every day and how long you will work on each item. Be sure to include downtime in your plan - time for your family, relaxation, exercise, whatever. This is important. after all, you're starting a home-based business to build a lifestyle, not to become the richest person in the cemetery!
Your daily plans and goals need to be very specific. It won't do you any good to write something like, "work on project x." What does that mean? How exactly do you "work on something?" Your plan needs to include a definite finishing point, such as "write a new article on dog grooming for page one of the website." See the difference? You can "work on" a project for years and never reach a point where you've had any success. By contrast, when you "write an article on x," you know you're done as soon as you've typed the final period.
If you're in a marketing business, try to farm out as much of the non-marketing related work as you can afford to do. For example, if you sell products or services, it might be beneficial for you to hire someone to help build and maintain your website. The money you'll spend to have someone else do it will be more than offset by the amount of time it will free up. Other areas you can outsource for your home based business online might be bookkeeping, mailing, etc.
Be realistic when planning your day. If you're still working your day job, schedule that from the time you get up in the morning until you get home from work. Don't forget to include commute time. Then, plan out your evening accordingly. Don't schedule a four hour task to be completed in one hour. It won't happen. If you have huge tasks, break them up as much as possible and schedule your time accurately. This will allow you to have a feeling of accomplishment and you'll get a lot more done in the long run.
Don't multi-task. I know that this is the latest "buzzword," but, in reality, multi-taking is one of the leading killers of productivity for most people. Schedule only one project at a time. You can work on more than one project during the day, but you shouldn't work on more than one project at a time. It's very difficult, if not totally impossible, to serve to masters at the same time. Give one project your undivided attention. Once you've completed that task, move on to another tasks on that project or to another project.
If you start your home based business online with tunnel vision on a daily basis you will accomplish more and become more successful in a shorter period of time.
You should also be a little flexible in your scheduling. In any business, there are bound to be interruption s that you couldn't possibly have planned for. In home-based businesses, the chance of distraction goes up exponentially. You'll be working on that hot new project, only to have the toilet overflow or a neighbor ring the doorbell. Plan on it. There will be things that happen that you can't plan for. That's why your schedule needs to include a little cushion.
What I like to do is plan out the items I want to get done and overestimate the time it will take to do them, by say 10%. Then, I have other items which are "on deck." These items aren't quite on today's schedule, but I want to do them soon. If I complete all of my scheduled tasks for the day, I simply look to see what's on deck and start on one of them. It's a bonus.
Sometimes, no matter how well you plan, you just won't finish what you schedule. It happens to everyone. That's when you simply revise your schedule for the next day to include the missed item(s). Don't get hung up on the fact that an item or two didn't get done as planned. Just take it in stride and keep on moving forward. Now, if you find yourself routinely missing your deadlines, you'll need to reevaluate your scheduling. Are you being realistic in your time allotments? Probably not. Adjust accordingly.
Here are just a few tips to help you maintain sanity and get your work done. With a little planning and a little effort, you can balance your home life and start a home based business online and literally schedule your way to success.
